Why Youth Work Matters: Supporting Young People to Find Their Voice

From 23 to 29 June, Wales celebrates Youth Work Week Wales, an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the vital role youth work plays in supporting young people across our communities.

Youth work looks different in every community. It might take place in a youth club, a school, a community centre, outdoors or through one-to-one mentoring. What connects it all is a commitment to helping young people develop confidence, build positive relationships and achieve their potential.

At Vocal Voyage, those values are at the heart of everything we do.

We support young people aged 11 to 24 with mild to moderate speech, language and communication needs across Conwy and Denbighshire. Through one-to-one mentoring, youth groups and awareness raising, we create safe, supportive spaces where young people can build confidence, develop communication skills and feel understood.

Why youth work is so important

Youth work is much more than providing activities. It is about building trusted relationships with young people and supporting them through some of the most important years of their lives.

For many young people, having one trusted adult who listens without judgement can make an enormous difference. Youth work helps young people develop confidence, resilience, independence and a sense of belonging. It provides opportunities to try new experiences, make friends and overcome challenges in a supportive environment.

These outcomes are valuable for every young person, but they can be especially important for those who experience speech, language and communication difficulties.

Supporting young people with speech, language and communication needs

Communication is central to almost every aspect of life. It affects friendships, education, employment and emotional wellbeing.

Young people with speech, language and communication needs may find it harder to express themselves, participate in conversations or feel confident in social situations. Over time, this can lead to isolation, frustration and lower self-esteem.

At Vocal Voyage, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to be heard.

Our approach focuses on building confidence, developing social communication and helping young people discover their strengths. While we do not provide speech and language therapy, we work alongside existing services to ensure young people receive the encouragement and opportunities they need to grow.

The story behind Vocal Voyage

Vocal Voyage was founded from both professional experience and lived experience.

Our founder, Byron Ford, holds a First Class BA (Hons) in Youth and Community Work and is a JNC-qualified Youth Worker, with years of experience supporting young people across North Wales. Byron also has a stammer himself, giving him a personal understanding of how communication difficulties can affect confidence, self-esteem and social situations.

That combination of youth work experience and lived experience inspired the creation of Vocal Voyage, a charity dedicated to ensuring every young person has the chance to find their voice.

Celebrating Youth Work Week Wales

This Youth Work Week Wales, we want to thank every youth worker, volunteer and organisation making a positive difference in the lives of young people.

Whether you're running a youth club, mentoring one young person, supporting families or creating opportunities within your community, your work matters.

Together, we are helping young people feel heard, valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

Because at Vocal Voyage, we believe one simple truth:

Every voice matters.
