Volunteers: The Backbone of the Charity Sector

Volunteers: The Backbone of the Charity Sector

Volunteers are the backbone of the charity sector. Without them, many charities simply would not be able to do the work they do.

More Than Giving Time

Volunteering is often described as “giving time,” but in reality it is much more than that.

Volunteers bring energy, kindness, experience, patience, ideas and commitment. They help charities reach more people, build stronger communities, and create spaces where people feel seen, heard and supported.

Why Supportive Environments Matter

For young people with speech, language and communication difficulties, the right support can make a real difference.

Confidence does not always grow in formal settings. Sometimes it grows through a calm conversation, a positive activity, a trusted adult, or a safe space where a young person does not feel rushed, judged or spoken over.

That is why supportive environments matter.

At Vocal Voyage, we support young people aged 11–24 with speech, language and communication difficulties through mentoring, youth groups, family support and awareness-raising. Our work is focused on confidence, wellbeing, social connection and helping young people feel more able to express themselves in everyday life.

The Role Volunteers Play

Volunteers can play an important role in creating that kind of environment.

Whether helping with activities, supporting sessions, raising awareness, or simply being a steady and encouraging presence, volunteers help make spaces feel welcoming and inclusive.

For some young people, communication can feel difficult, frustrating or isolating. A patient, understanding volunteer can help reduce that pressure. They can help a young person feel included, build trust, take part at their own pace, and recognise that their voice matters.

Thank You to Volunteers

This Volunteers’ Week, we want to say thank you to volunteers across the charity sector. Your time and commitment help keep communities going.

You may not always see the full impact of what you do, but it matters.

To every volunteer who gives their time, skills and care to support others: thank you. You are part of the reason charities can continue to make a difference.

At Vocal Voyage, we believe every young person deserves to feel heard, valued and supported. Volunteers help make that possible.
