Back to School with Speech & Language Difficulties

Tips for young people, parents, and teachers in Conwy & Denbighshire
At Vocal Voyage, we know that going back to school can be a big deal for any young person. For those with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), it can bring extra challenges.
Whether it’s the worry of speaking up in class, the pressure of making new friends, or struggling to follow fast-paced instructions, the school environment can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why it’s so important we work together with young people, parents, and teachers to create a more inclusive, understanding start to the new term.
Here are some simple, practical tips to help make that transition smoother:
📌 For Young People
• It’s okay to take your time. Not everyone communicates in the same way or at the same speed. Give yourself permission to pause, think, and ask for clarification.
• Use tools that help you. Visual timetables, keyword cards, or even notes on your phone can make a big difference.
• Find your safe person. Whether it’s a teacher, a TA, or a friend, knowing someone “gets it” can help reduce anxiety.
• Join in, in your own way. Clubs and groups can feel scary, but even just watching from the side or going with a friend is a great first step.
👨👩👧 For Parents & Carers
• Talk through the school day. Help your child prepare by walking through what to expect new teachers, classroom routines, lunchtime arrangements, etc.
• Communicate with school early. Don’t wait for problems to arise. A quick email or chat with the SENCO or pastoral team can go a long way.
• Celebrate small wins. Getting through the day, asking for help, or even just walking into the building with confidence are all things to praise.
• Look after your own wellbeing too. Supporting a child with SLCN can be emotionally tough. Make space for your own support when you need it.
🧑🏫 For Teachers & School Staff
• Be aware of hidden needs. Many young people with SLCN mask their struggles. Just because they’re quiet or “well-behaved” doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling.
• Give extra processing time. A few extra seconds before expecting a response can make a world of difference.
• Use visuals and break things down. Clear, simple instructions with visual aids help all learners, not just those with SLCN.
• Create space for connection. A quick check-in or positive comment can build trust and confidence.
💬 Every Voice Matters
In Conwy and Denbighshire, we’re proud to work alongside schools, youth services, and families to support young people aged 11 to 24 who face challenges with speech, language, and communication. Whether it’s through mentoring, youth groups, or awareness-raising, Vocal Voyage is here to help make that transition back to school a little easier.
Because we believe that every voice matters, especially in the classroom.
🧠 The most important thing to know?
Don’t finish their sentences. Even if you think you're helping, it can feel like failure for a young person who's trying to speak. Let them finish in their own time – or check in and ask if they’d like you to help. Giving that choice back is powerful
